      <image:caption>We focused quickly on an internal finish, oriented strand board, that would honestly display its fabrication, installation and method of fixing, without requiring additional finishes and little if any long-term maintenance. The external cladding, Colorcoat Urban, has a life expectancy of 40 years, requires no maintenance and, like SterlingOSB, is also manufactured in the UK. The existing failing rainwater drainage system on the original house was replaced with mill finished aluminium guttering and downpipes. The clients find the new space enticing and warm; that it bridges the gap between their house and their garden; that it is a space that they can orchestrate and alter with the adaptable OSB furniture which they commissioned for the project. And critically, they find that the project transforms the way they use and enjoy their house.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>We wanted to respect the strong and pure modernist design, and the distinctive form of the original house required a careful and balanced response. The construction budget for the extension was modest, but was allowed to rise during the on-site phase in order to undertake considerable refurbishment to the existing roof and rainwater goods – works which had been anticipated within the contingency. The design intent for the extension project was that it should be purist in form, detail and material – almost sculptural in essence – and that the materials selected should be clearly revealed and allowed to transform over time without maintenance</image:caption>

      <image:caption>RIBA SUFFOLK DESIGN AWARD 2015 The original house at Eva’s Place was designed and built in the 1980s by Clive Latimer, Product Designer and collaborator with Robin Day. It was conceived by Latimer as a prototype for environmentally friendly, sustainable living; utilizing wood stove heating, attempting to incorporate principles of heat storage, exchange and solar gain and designed on a modular system for economy and future reproduction. We developed the brief with the clients: to remove an existing defunct heat store (conservatory) area; provide a new room; create more floor space; improve the movement and use of the house; give a new focus; bring in light; make a new connection to the garden; and enhance the house.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>IPSWICH, 2016 An existing structural-opening forms the connection into this projecting new addition to a half timbered early 20th century house. Wrapping the glass around the full rear elevation and onto both sides of the new form gives a lightness and transparency in contrast to the original house. Charred and oiled vertical timber cladding finishes the remaining panels of the flank walls and makes a contemporary response to the existing dark timber features. A strong colour scheme and earthy materials bring the richness of the garden into the room and balance heavy historic wood panelling and art-nouveau influences in the interior of the house. The full height rear glazing to three sides and a rooflight ensure a bright new space and the sedum green roof brings the garden up to the first floor windows.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>SUFFOLK, 2009 This new facility, built in the grounds of the existing primary school, prioritises its southern aspect and the views from the indoor spaces across the surrounding woodscape and towards the further school community. A large covered external play area was incorporated into the designs allowing maximum outdoor play opportunities all year round while protecting the large areas of south-easterly glazing from excessive solar gain. The open plan interior provides ease of access and visibility. The external form of the building is one of simple, playful interlocking geometric forms. zinc and timber external finishes are contemporary, enduring and tactile, providing a welcoming first education environment for these youngest of users.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>UFFORD, SUFFOLK, 2012 The clients for this project desired a new-build 5-bedroom house, including a visitor’s suite, home office and large open-plan living space on the ground floor. The external form of the house was heavily constrained by the local planning department, yet internally, a coherent layout was achieved with generous spaces flooded with natural light. The use of a restrained palette of colours and natural materials gives continuity and a sense of craftsmanship to the interior. Externally, the house makes use of traditional materials with modern details.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>CHAPPEL, SUFFOLK, 2015 This project is a large extension to an existing Potton timber frame house from the 1960s. Rough sawn Siberian Larch contrasted by smooth dark grey aluminium glazing in simple forms highlights the grain of the timber and responds to the woodland setting of this domestic addition. Expansive cabin-like space with generous daylight provided by a series of slot rooflights brings the external rural setting into the room. Strong horizontal glazing maximises the aspect to the surrounding garden and stretches the space. Use of painted rough sawn timber boards above the exposed rafters creates texture and depth into the high space.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, MEDWAY CAMPUS, 2006 University of Greenwich required a new building with laboratory, offices and ancillary accommodation for the Engineering students. The site for the building is a sensitive setting within historic buildings. The solution was a simple, pure form enhanced by the choices of colour palette and the balance of openings in the sinusoidal, horizontal cladding. The quality of workmanship and execution becomes paramount to the success of a project of great simplicity and contribute here to the crisp result.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Cork Room - CORK ROOM</image:title>
      <image:caption>BOXFORD, SUFFOLK, 2018 This project is an addition to the simple forms of a village-located Grade II listed cottage which had previously been extended by a linear rear wing in the latter 20thC. The original attached house had no rear facing windows at ground floor level and neither it, nor its first extension, benefitted fully from the light or views into its verdant south-west facing courtyard garden. The client, a painter and keen gardener, wanted a bright new space in which to enjoy their days and evenings in close proximity and connection with the garden. We generated a form for the extension which articulates its separation from the linear wing with a continuous element of roof and wall glazing. Large sliding-folding doors and a flush raised patio area, finished with cleaned sandstone retained from the site and laid to provide a step-free rear access, entirely open the new room to the garden when the weather permits. A further opening rooflight within the main sedum roof area allows additional light to penetrate deep into the plan of the extension and gives additional ventilation control.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Against the solidity of the painted rear external render and the modern brick of the linear wing we chose to use cedar shingle cladding on the small area of external wall, giving it a natural and crafted finish and a strong affinity with the traditional cottage garden planting. To enliven the internal space and draw further integration with the external garden materials, an internal wall of natural cork pinboard echoes the colours of the cedar and allows the occupant to display their works-in-progress. The space provides the client with the room that was missing from their home, and serves equally well for painting by natural daylight as relaxing with a glass of wine at days’ end.</image:caption>

To achieve this, the outbuildings were refurbished and a new link was constructed, connecting them to the house. Feature materials, including a bare brick wall and the green oak frame, are set within smooth plastered finishes. This achieves a bright internal space whilst retaining the character associated with such a historic building.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>SUFFOLK, 2013 This proposal for a new house which bridges across a stream is located within the subdivision of an existing property in a 1970s residential development. The site sits adjacent to a conservation area where there is considerable variety in the surrounding architecture and village context. Our intention was that the proposed dwelling should respond to both the contour of the landscape and the neighbouring street frontage. Varying layers of permeable and solid screening give definition and privacy to generous areas of glazing and external spaces.</image:caption>
